HONOURS DEGREE IN APPLIED LANGUAGE STUDIES
This course provides a solid theoretical foundation in Applied Language Studies, equipping the student with the necessary expertise to become leaders in addressing issues of linguistic diversity through theoretical understandings and practical application of these.
Entrance requirements
Potential candidates must have:

a Bachelors Degree in Arts, with a language as a major or an equivalent qualification

an average mark of at least 60% in the final undergraduate year
N.B. The programme offers the option of obtaining recognition, at the discretion of the University, of prior learning and experience (for example, practising teachers), if such learning or experience coincides with aspects of the syllabus.

MASTERS DEGREE IN APPLIED LANGUAGE STUDIES
This two-year part-time or one year full-time Master's Degree by thesis only, is flexible in terms of focus on:

Language Acquisition, Learning and Teaching (particularly second-language acquisition in contexts of linguistic diversity)

Translation Studies
-
Any field of study which has a methodological slant incorporating linguistic/discourse analysis or focusses on studies of linguistic diversity in any sphere of public or social life.

Applied Languages Studies related to any local language
Entrance requirements
Students need to have an Honours degree in any language-related field with an average mark of 60%. Each application will be assessed individually.
Course structure
Tuition will be only provided in the form of a two one-week block release contact period on campus in the first quarter and third quarter of each year, followed by guided independent thesis-based research with consultation. Consultation constitutes giving feedback on written drafts in a meeting (for Port Elizabeth-based candidates) or by email for out of town candidates.
Programme syllabi
Master's level (LAR500) thesis may encompass any field of research related to the Honours offerings, or any other topic in Applied Linguistics/Language Studies, by prior arrangement with the postgraduate coordinator.
